7 Myths About Laser Hair Removal — Debunked

Exhausting shaving, waxing, hair removal creams, epilating, and frequent skin irritations. Think about how many hours of your life you’ve spent on temporary hair removal. Laser hair removal has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in recent years — but it’s also surrounded by misconceptions. Let’s separate fact from fiction.

Myth 1: Laser hair removal is permanent after one session

Fact: Laser hair removal is a course of treatment, not a one-time procedure. Because hair grows in cycles and only about 15% of follicles are active at any one time, 6–8 sessions are typically required to achieve significant permanent reduction. Each session targets the follicles in their active growth phase.

Myth 2: It’s extremely painful

Fact: With modern SHR technology (like the Soprano Titanium), laser hair removal is largely painless. Most clients describe the sensation as a gentle warmth. Even older laser systems with integrated cooling are significantly more comfortable than waxing.

Myth 3: Laser hair removal causes cancer

Fact: Laser hair removal uses non-ionising radiation — it does not penetrate deep enough to cause DNA damage or cancer. It is fundamentally different from X-rays or UV radiation. This myth has no scientific basis.

Myth 4: It doesn’t work on dark skin

Fact: Older laser technologies were less safe for darker skin tones. Modern diode lasers (like the Soprano Titanium) and Nd:YAG lasers are specifically designed to be safe and effective for darker skin (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI). At SATORI Clinics, we assess each client’s skin type before recommending the appropriate laser.

Myth 5: It doesn’t work on fair or blonde hair

Fact: Truly white or grey hair remains very difficult to treat with any laser, as melanin is the target. However, light brown, strawberry blonde, and even some lighter blonde hair can be treated effectively with SHR technology, which also targets the stem cells of the follicle — not just melanin. Results vary.

Myth 6: You can’t have laser treatment in summer

Fact: With modern laser systems (particularly SHR/diode), year-round treatment is possible. The key requirement is avoiding active sun exposure and applying SPF 50 daily. Your therapist will advise on specific precautions for summer treatments.

Myth 7: Laser hair removal thickens regrowth

Fact: The opposite is true. Any hair that does regrow after laser treatment is typically finer, lighter, and sparser than before. Laser energy damages the follicle — it cannot make hair grow thicker.
