Laser Hair Removal Requirements: What You Need to Know Before Your Session

Laser hair removal is the most modern and effective method for dealing with unwanted hair permanently. It is suitable for all body areas and its effects are long-lasting. There are some key requirements to be aware of, however, to ensure the procedure is safe and effective.

Before the procedure:

  • Shave the area 24 hours before your session. Do not wax or use depilatory creams in the weeks leading up to your appointment — the hair root needs to be present for the laser to target it
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 4 weeks before treatment. Tanned skin has a higher risk of side effects. Always inform your therapist if you’ve been in the sun recently
  • Arrive with clean, product-free skin — no deodorant, body lotion, or makeup on the treated area
  • Avoid self-tanning products for at least 2 weeks before your session
  • Inform your therapist about any medications you are taking — some antibiotics and topical treatments (such as retinoids) can make skin photosensitive

Who is NOT a suitable candidate?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People with active skin infections or open wounds in the treatment area
  • Those currently taking photosensitising medications (consult your doctor)
  • People with a history of keloid scarring in the treatment area

After the procedure:

  • Apply SPF 50 sunscreen daily to treated areas
  • Avoid heat exposure (sauna, gym, hot baths) for 24–48 hours
  • Do not wax or pluck hairs between sessions — shaving only is permitted
  • Keep skin moisturised and well hydrated
