What are the causes of Acne?

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. It causes whiteheads and blackheads or pimples. Acne is most common among teenagers, although it affects people of all ages. Sebaceous glands are small glands located near the surface of the skin. They are attached to hair follicles, which are small holes in the skin from which a single hair grows. The sebaceous glands lubricate the hair shaft and skin to protect it from drying out. This is done by producing an oily substance called sebum. In acne, the glands begin to produce too much sebum, and the excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and the two substances form a plug in the follicle. If the plugged follicle is near the surface of the skin, it bulges outward, creating a whitehead. Otherwise, the plugged follicle may be open to the skin, causing a black dot to form. Normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin can contaminate and infect clogged follicles, causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.

Acne Myths

Although acne is one of the most common skin diseases, it is also one of the least understood. There are many myths and misconceptions about it:

  1. Acne is caused by dirty skin and poor hygiene: Most of the biological reactions that cause acne take place under the skin, not on the surface, so the cleanliness of your skin does not affect acne. Washing your face more than twice a day can only make your skin worse.
  2. Squeezing out blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples is the best way to get rid of acne: It can actually worsen symptoms and leave scars.
  3. Sunbathing, tanning beds and sunlamps help improve acne symptoms: There is no evidence that prolonged exposure to sunlight or the use of tanning beds can improve acne. Many of the medications used to treat acne can make your skin more sensitive to light, so exposure can cause painful damage to your skin and also increase cancer risks.
  4. Acne is contagious: You can’t pass acne to other people.
  5. Toothpaste cures acne: Many websites claim that toothpaste can dry out individual pimples. Although toothpaste contains antibacterial substances, it also contains substances that can irritate and damage your skin. Using toothpaste in this way is not recommended. There are much more effective and safer means of treatment.

What are the types of Acne?

There are several types of acne, including:

  1. Cystic acne: Cystic acne causes deep, pus-filled pimples and nodules. They can cause scarring.
  2. Fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis): Fungal acne occurs when yeast builds up in the hair follicles. They can be itchy and inflamed.
  3. Hormonal acne: Hormonal acne affects adults who have an overproduction of sebum that clogs their pores.
  4. Nodular acne: Nodular acne is a severe form of acne that causes pimples on the surface of the skin and tender, nodular lumps under the skin.

All of these forms of acne can affect your self-confidence, and cystic and nodular acne can lead to permanent skin damage in the form of scarring. At SATORI, we recommend that you seek the help of a medical professional early so that they can determine the best treatment option for you. If you have acne, know that you are not alone. Acne is the most common skin condition that people experience. Approximately 80% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 have at least a mild form of acne.
