Skin pigmentation, which refers to the amount of melanin produced by the body, determines skin color. The two main types of melanin\u2014eumelanin and pheomelanin\u2014are produced by melanocytes in the epidermal layer of the skin. Pheomelanin causes lighter skin tones, while eumelanin is responsible for darker skin tones. Human skin pigmentation and melanin synthesis are highly variable and are influenced by genetics, exposure to ultraviolet light, and certain medications.<\/span><\/p>\n

The physical appearance, psychological health, and social functioning of patients are affected by a significant number of skin diseases that cause pigmentary abnormalities.
